Tips for Maintaining a Healthy, Comfortable Pregnancy

chiropractic during pregnancyI can picture the glare in the eyes of mothers as they read the title of this post. Comfortable pregnancy? There is no such thing! Spoken just like a man!

I will never claim to know what it’s like to be pregnant or that I can make all discomfort disappear. However, as a chiropractic physician for 20 years, and as a father who treated my own wife during five pregnancies, I’ve found great fulfillment in helping women remain as healthy, comfortable and stress-free as possible before, during and after their pregnancies.

A healthy pregnancy is the result of more than healthy eating, although nutrition takes on even greater importance in pregnant women. We need to address all three components of the Triad of Health during pregnancy – the physical, the nutritional and the psychological – through an integrated approach to wellness.

The Greatest Gift You Can Give Your Family for 2014

Wellness Lifestyle I can’t stand New Year’s resolutions. They usually involve temporary, unhealthy gimmicks designed to fill corporate coffers while leading to disappointment, failure and depression.

We need to stop looking for shortcuts and commit to living a wellness lifestyle – long-term proposition with health benefits that far outweigh the challenges. Let’s start now and put a plan for living a wellness lifestyle in writing.

You can’t build a house without a written architectural plan, and you can’t have insurance coverage without a written policy. Wellness is no different.

My end-of-year wish is that every family starts writing things down so we can develop a true wellness plan for 2014. Start by looking at the physical, nutritional and psychological components of the Triad of Health.

Balance is Key

Not being an auto-mechanic, every trip to repair or maintain my car is an adventure.  Here in Monmouth County, I have experienced too many situations where I get one thing fixed only to discover something else needs repair.  Some mechanics focus on one part of the car at a time and ignore all of the other connected parts.  That often makes me the victim of “unintended consequences”.

Triad of Health

Some things, like your approach to health are not meant to be treated in a piecemeal fashion.  I focus my patients on the “triad of health”: Nutrition, Physical and Psychological.  Our body is designed to function as highly integrated unit.  “Homeostasis” means balance and the goal for everyone should be a lifestyle that illustrates choices designed around balance.
