When We Know the Outcome Will Be Bad, We Need to Change

Changing your unhealthy habits“Knowledge of a likely or a guaranteed future outcome does not change present behavior.”

A friend of mine, who is an OB/GYN, recently said this to me when talking about risky sexual behavior and sexually transmitted diseases that she sees every day in private practice. In other words, people know something bad can or will happen when they behave a certain way, but they do it anyway.

This statement can be applied to virtually every aspect of our lives, particularly our health.

We know smoking, at the very least, takes years off of our lives and the lives of those who we subject to secondhand smoke. At worst, a smoker will get lung cancer and die at a very young age. But they keep smoking.

We know fatty foods, processed foods and artificially sweetened foods increase our risk of obesity, heart disease, stroke, type II diabetes and other chronic diseases. But we continue to eat food from boxes, cans and fast food drive-thrus.

How to Make Your Commute Less of a Pain

easing the effects of a long commuteAccording to the Census Bureau, the average commute time in New Jersey is 30 minutes, which is 20 percent longer than the national average. Portions of Monmouth and Middlesex Counties reported average commute times of more than 45 minutes.

Long commutes do more than take up an hour or more of our day and cause aggravation. They can be physically and mentally painful.

Last summer, I wrote a post that explained why sitting can be more damaging to the human body than smoking. The human body was designed to be in motion, not to sit on the couch or behind the wheel of a car.

When we sit for extended periods of time, the discs in the spine become compressed. You could have the most comfortable seat in the most expensive luxury car, but you’ll still get aches and pains in the back, neck, shoulders and hips when you spend too much time sitting in that seat.

Sitting also makes it difficult for the body to burn calories and convert bad cholesterol into good cholesterol. Then we get fat, which increases the risk of a number of chronic illnesses. Continue reading

Hammers Are Swinging at Natural Healthcare Center. Here’s Why.

Natural Healthcare Center 2nd Floor Renovations

The newly designed Physical Therapy and Nutrition offices on our second floor.

You may have noticed construction here at Natural Healthcare Center during the past few months. Rest assured that this is far more than a simple remodeling project. This is another investment in my 30-year journey that’s been dedicated to doing something different in healthcare.

It would be very easy for me to move to a small medical office, have a staff of three or four employees, work 20 fewer hours per week, treat fewer patients, and offer fewer services. But that would mean bailing on a 30-year journey, and I have no desire to do that. I started Proodian Healthcare because I wanted to do something beyond the norm. I didn’t want to take the safe route.

My goal is and always has been to create a new layer of healthcare. The layer between traumatic medical care and the horrific management of chronic conditions. This involves a great deal of risk and responsibility. It’s not easy. But it continues to be an incredibly rewarding journey.

I’ve very proud of the fact that I graduated from chiropractic school with 62 other people. I obviously wanted to be a chiropractor like everyone else, but I also saw the need for change that others may not have seen. I’m very proud of the fact that most people who come to Natural Healthcare Center, both as patients and as visitors, are enamored with our facility. What started as notebook doodle when I was a pre-med student in college has evolved into a true wellness facility.

Acupuncture, chiropractic care and other forms of healthcare are typically fragmented, but we’ve integrated them under one roof.

Not everything we do here makes money. But everything we do is based on a certain code and core values. Everything we do is driven by the desire to change healthcare. That’s what Proodian Healthcare, Wellness At Work and Natural Healthcare Center stand for.

We’re trying to change how healthcare works in this country and make things easier for our patients. That’s why the construction has been happening.

We’re welcoming a neurosurgeon, an interventional pain management doctor and a physician’s assistant for two reasons. First, we want to minimize the number of places our patients have to visit. Second, we want our patients to receive care in a truly integrated health and wellness center.

All business owners, not just in healthcare, should reinvest in their clients.

I respect my patients. I want them to have a clean bathroom. I want them to enjoy fresh fruit in the lobby. I want to be involved in my community. I want to provide them with everything they need under one roof.

The construction, the new specialists who will be seeing Natural Healthcare Center patients, the little details that make your visit an enjoyable experience – these are all part of a 30-year journey to do something different and change healthcare.

I hope you’ll join the Proodian Healthcare family and me as we continue our mission to help people feel better, function better and live longer.

What is Chiropractic Neurology?

Chiropractic NeurologyA lot of doctors try to sound smart or prove their worth by using big words and medical jargon. What they really end up doing is confusing their patients.

At Natural Healthcare Center, we try to keep it simple. Instead of using big words that require a medical dictionary to understand, we explain complex concepts in laymen’s terms. One of those concepts is chiropractic neurology.

Chiropractic neurology is a discipline of chiropractic care that treats the body based on how the nervous system is performing. Neurons process and transmit information through electrical and chemical signals in the human body. When you use a neuron, it sends a message to itself to make more protein and become stronger.

Another Super Shameful Money Grab

American FLag Football Helmet on Grass with Dollar Symbol CloudsSuper Bowl 49 is in the books. Tom Brady and the Patriots are champions again. Seattle coach Pete Carroll will spend his offseason being second-guessed for his play call at the end of the game.

And the NFL, its top players, NBC and many celebrities continue to make money off of products that make people sick.

Pepsi returned to sponsor the halftime show. Coca Cola talks about making people happy and glosses over the fact that soda has been directly connected to chronic diseases that obviously make people unhappy.

McDonalds took a similar approach by offering free food to people in exchange for kind or happy acts. I must say that it’s refreshing to see that more and more people are passing over McDonalds and sodas in favor of healthier alternatives.

Leading up to the Super Bowl, I heard about Peyton Manning and Derek Jeter attending a 50th anniversary party for Gatorade, a sports drink that’s loaded with sugar, sodium and other harmful substances. Taylor Swift is now shilling Diet Coke. Continue reading

Reflections on 2014

Natural Healthcare Center success storiesLike many people during the Christmas season, I like to reflect on the year gone by. I’m reminded of how blessed I am to have a family that I love, a job that brings me fulfillment, and a practice where I feel we truly make  a difference in people’s lives.

As part of my reflection, I go back through the emails, messages and letters I’ve received from people and organizations who I’ve done my very best to help over the course of the year. This not only puts a smile on my face, but it strengthens my faith in God and the mission of Proodian Healthcare.

It also motivates me to push forward in 2015 and continue the movement toward true health and wellness that is slowly but surely being embraced in our country. We can only combat the chronic illness epidemic in our country if education leads to motivation, and motivation leads to real behavioral change.

Here are a few examples of feedback that serve as motivation for my staff and me.

I had fallen into a rut, and I had become resolved to accept my post-menopausal elevated blood levels, increasing weight gain, stress, and fatigue until I attended a By Design Ministries seminar, where Dr. Proodian offered very practical and sensible information and solutions. Continue reading

Are You Suffering from Adrenal Fatigue?

Adrenal Fatique and sleep disordersIn previous posts, I discussed how hormones help keep the brain functioning properly, as well as the danger of hormonal imbalance. If one part of your hormonal structure is off, it can create a downstream effect throughout the hormonal cascade that hampers brain function.

It’s important to remember the concept of bio-individuality, which means we’re all different. We may have the same organs and bones, but we don’t have the same hormonal structure. How we feel, eat and exercise will shape each individual’s hormonal structure.

A key factor in balancing our hormones is how we respond to the stress in our lives. Our adrenal glands, which lie on top of our kidneys, produce stress hormones – DHEA, cortisol and adrenaline. The production of these hormones is regulated by the brain.

How I Changed My Behavior and Transformed My Body

Proodian healthcare Patient Success StoryThis is a guest post by Bill Freeman, a retired 63-year-old school principal and Natural Healthcare Center patient. I’d like to personally thank Bill for sharing his story. Dr. James Proodian

I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer three years ago when tumors were discovered on both sides of my thyroid. After having surgery to remove the thyroid, I was treated with radioactive iodine to kill any remaining cancer cells in my body.

Over the course of about two weeks, I gained 32 pounds. You have to drink a lot of fluids to get the radioactive iodine out of your body, so much of what I gained was water weight.

I had been getting regular chiropractic adjustments from Dr. Proodian and finally told him that I was disappointed because I couldn’t lose the weight. I had been on Weight Watchers. I used apps on my phone. I would lose a few pounds, hit a wall, and just gain it all back.

Dr. Proodian suggested that I see Dr. (Oscar) Coetzee. I told Dr. Coetzee that if he could help me lose weight, I would do whatever he wanted me to do. I’m a Type A personality. If you tell me to eat four ounces of turkey, I’m going to eat four ounces of turkey. You tell me to eat 17 carrots, and I’m going to eat 17 carrots.

What’s in your Condiments?

Whats in your condimentsBarbecue season is almost here. While grilling is one of the healthier ways to prepare food – much better than frying food in unhealthy oils – most of us tend to make our grilled foods unhealthy by adding condiments.

Condiments like mayonnaise, ketchup, sour cream, ranch and blue cheese dressing, and steak sauce are added passively, almost unconsciously, because they make our food taste better. We usually don’t even realize we’re doing it. In other words, we give our condiments a free ride.

Many of the most popular condiments are some of the worst substances that we can put in our bodies. But they don’t have to be unhealthy. We simply have to make better choices or make them ourselves.

Our bodies are designed to process naturally occurring foods and ingredients. Our bodies were not designed to process man-made food products that make up the main ingredients in most condiments.

How to Make Senior Moments Less Frequent

Improving memoryWhere did I put my keys? Didn’t I already pay this bill? I know you just told me five minutes ago, but what’s your name again?

We’re all susceptible to senior moments – minor cases of forgetfulness or confusion that are hardly limited to senior citizens. Sometimes senior moments are frustrating. Sometimes they’re funny.

Even though these mental glitches are usually harmless, they can make us wonder if we’re losing our mental capacity. Fortunately, we can follow a plan that can help minimize these senior moments. I like to call it your personal brain management program.

Step 1: Balance Fat Consumption

For most of us, that means increasing omega-3 fats, such as those found in cold-water fish, flax, and walnuts. It also means reducing consumption of omega-6 vegetable oils like corn, cottonseed and safflower oils, and eliminating dangerous trans fats. Balancing the consumption of omega-3 and omega-6 fats can be accomplished through dietary changes, and supplements are needed in many cases.

What to Look For in a Pain Doctor

How to Select a Doctor to treat your painMy wife and I are having our basement painted. With five kids, the basement is an important place in our home.

Without a second thought, we called the painter who we’ve used for years. He told my wife that he would send an estimate.

She said, “Why? It doesn’t matter. We’re hiring you.”

Isn’t it great when you get to a place where you unconditionally trust someone? We don’t have to worry about our painter taking advantage of us. We have no doubt that he’ll give us a fair price, show up on time and do a wonderful job.

How Long-Distance Running Can Affect the Heart

running race imageLast week, I discussed why exercise needs to be prescribed like medicine is prescribed, according to the specific needs of each individual. This is why it makes no sense to tell everyone who wants to lose weight to get on a treadmill or go outside and start running.

In fact, I’ve never endorsed long-distance running for exercise, even though a myth exists that running is good for the heart and the best way to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system.

You may have heard the phrase “runner’s high,” a feeling of invincibility that helps runners overcome and ignore pain and lose sense of time. Runners have certainly heard of this.

However, new research has introduced the concept of runner’s plaque – coronary artery plaque – which can be caused by running long distances for a number of years, according to a study conducted by the Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation.

Who’s Writing Your Prescription for Exercise?

Prescription Form - Get FitI never tell people to eat right and exercise. As a doctor, I’m not doing my job if I used such a vague expression. We need to undo the way we’ve been programmed our entire lives – programming that says the ticket to good health or weight loss is to simply eat right and exercise.

About three years ago, I hired a personal trainer. I told her certain things about me that I hoped she would take into account when training me. Unfortunately, she didn’t listen.

She took the exact same approach with me that she took with everyone else. Because I have a weird form of anemia, I ended up getting sick and hurting myself. What happened to the “personal” in personal training?

Obviously, I fired her and found a new trainer.

Exercise is a prescription that needs to be prescribed just like drugs are prescribed. We need to specifically define what approach is best for each of us to reach our own individual goals.

Tips for Maintaining a Healthy, Comfortable Pregnancy

chiropractic during pregnancyI can picture the glare in the eyes of mothers as they read the title of this post. Comfortable pregnancy? There is no such thing! Spoken just like a man!

I will never claim to know what it’s like to be pregnant or that I can make all discomfort disappear. However, as a chiropractic physician for 20 years, and as a father who treated my own wife during five pregnancies, I’ve found great fulfillment in helping women remain as healthy, comfortable and stress-free as possible before, during and after their pregnancies.

A healthy pregnancy is the result of more than healthy eating, although nutrition takes on even greater importance in pregnant women. We need to address all three components of the Triad of Health during pregnancy – the physical, the nutritional and the psychological – through an integrated approach to wellness.

Rutgers Research Shows Acupuncture Can Treat Inflammation

acupuncture long branch new jerseyAcupuncture has been used in China for thousands of years to restore and maintain good health by improving blood and energy flow, stimulating the body’s immune system and activating our natural healing powers. Although the effectiveness of acupuncture has been scientifically proven, the acceptance of acupuncture has been extremely slow in our country.

When you look at the American health system, which focuses on treating disease with medication and surgery instead of preventing disease through a wellness lifestyle, it’s easy to see why the medical establishment has been reluctant to embrace acupuncture. It doesn’t fit in with their way of thinking.

I hope new scientific evidence produced by researchers at Rutgers University, added to the mountain of evidence that already exists, will motivate them to change their way of thinking, especially as it relates to acupuncture.

The research established a direct connection between a form of acupuncture and relief from sepsis, an inflammatory disorder that can develop after an infection. Sepsis most commonly occurs in hospitals, claiming approximately 250,000 lives in our country each year. In other words, people don’t die from the infection. They die from sepsis.

Why Trans Fats and High-Fructose Corn Syrup Must Be Banned

Banning Trans FatsLast week, I rattled off a list of food substances that are banned in other countries around the world but are shamefully used by food manufacturers in the United States. Today, I want to take a hard look at one ingredient that looks to be on its way out, and another that should be.

Partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, more commonly known as trans fats, could be nearing their final days in the American food supply. These man-made substances are used to extend the shelf life of food and make it more flavorful. They also increase the production of bad cholesterol that leads to obesity, heart disease and other chronic illnesses.

Consumption of trans fats among Americans has dropped significantly in the last 10 years and food manufacturers have voluntarily reduced the use of trans fats. However, the risk is still serious enough for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to finally step in.

The FDA has ruled trans fats aren’t “generally recognized as safe” – the understatement of the year – and if this preliminary determination is finalized, foods with such unapproved additives would be illegal to sell.

A Blow to the Poison Peddlers?

Blow to the Poison Peddlers

A few weeks ago, I pointed out what should be painfully obvious – poison peddlers continue to dominate Super Bowl advertising and promote products that are killing us. I also referenced a new study from JAMA Internal Medicine that revealed a single serving of a sugar-sweetened beverage per day – I’m looking at you, soda – increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Apparently, that study caught the eye of some responsible lawmakers in California.

A bill is being proposed that would require sugary drinks sold in California to have health warning labels like the ones found on a pack of cigarettes and a container of alcohol. This label would state:

STATE OF CALIFORNIA SAFETY WARNING: Drinking beverages with added sugar(s) contributes to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay.

Understanding Detox, Part 2: Ending the Vicious Toxic Cycle

Understanding DetoxIn Part 1 of this post, I explained the real definition of detoxification, which is a lot different than what you’ve probably seen on television and the internet. I talked about some of the most common toxins, how they affect our health, and some of the symptoms of an excessive toxic burden in our bodies.

Because our first exposure to toxins occurs in the womb, the question isn’t if we’re toxic. The real question is, how toxic are we?

That question can be answered through comprehensive screening, including blood tests and surveys, to assess an individual’s level of toxification. In other words, detox isn’t for everyone.

The next step to understanding detox is to learn about the body’s detoxification pathways and how a real detox program helps.

Understanding Detox, Part 1: The Danger of Toxins

NHC's Detoxification Program Long Branch NJ

I’ve noticed quite a bit of confusion and misinformation about detoxification on television, online and among the general public. True detoxification is not a cleanse, and it’s not for everyone. Detoxification is for people who have been properly screened through blood tests, surveys and other testing to assess their level of toxification.

Detoxification is exactly what the word implies. A detoxification program is intended to detoxify the liver and lymphatic system. It’s like cleaning out your garage and putting everything back where it’s supposed to be.

Simply put, you need to give your liver a break. If your liver is toxic, it can’t detoxify the blood that passes through it. Toxins are then recirculated through our bodies, creating a toxic environment.

Now that we’ve clarified what detoxification is, it’s important to understand exactly what toxins are, the symptoms of toxins and the problems they cause.
