You Can’t Measure Health with a Bathroom Scale: A NHC Success Story

Proodian healthcare Patient Success StoryI’ve had the pleasure of getting to know a fantastic woman who came to Natural Healthcare Center through CityWell, a free resource created to help city of Long Branch employees and their dependents lead healthier lives. I’m proud to be CityWell’s health educator.

To protect this patient’s privacy, I’ll refer to her as Olivia.

Olivia is 5-foot-1 and weighed 256 pounds when she first came to see us. Just 27 years old, she was diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome, a group of medical disorders that collectively increase the risk of chronic illnesses like cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer.

Olivia’s Body Mass Index (BMI) was 48.5. BMI greater than 30 is considered obese. Her body fat percentage, which should be under 30 percent, was 54.1 percent.

Why Can’t I Lose Weight?

Overwhelmed Woman Looking at List of Weight Lost ChoicesI enjoyed a few rare days off with the family for Christmas and New Year’s, and I guess Santa hit the cookies a little too hard this year because we discovered a leaky roof in our laundry room.

I had the insurance agent come to the house and he wrote me a check for the damage he could see. I asked him about possible damage behind the walls, thinking the water may have caused damage in the bathroom or found its way downstairs into the basement.

The insurance agent said, “We only pay for what we can see.”

I understand insurance companies have their policies, so I took the check and said I would call him if we find more damage when my contractors go in and make the necessary repairs.

This is an illustration of the prevailing mindset in our country, but especially in healthcare. We only treat what we can see. What can I see in the mirror? What can I see on the scale?

Unfortunately, not enough people take the time to dig deeper behind the walls to check for damage and see if water is flowing down to the basement, which brings us to the title of this post – a question I commonly hear from patients and audience members at my speaking engagements:

Why can’t I lose weight?

Weight-loss-blue-puzzle-pieces-27135851

Skinny jeans. Swimsuits. Tank tops. Skirts and shorts. Yes, we all would like to look our best for summer, and maybe losing 5-10 pounds would help us feel a little more confident as we spend more time outdoors and on vacation.

If you’re thinking of shedding weight for summer, don’t believe the myths or fall for the gimmicks you see on TV or read about online. None of them follow the Triad of Health and integrate physical, nutritional and psychological components in a way that’s balanced and healthy. Remember, the scale and the mirror are far less important than our actual body composition and proper blood values.

So many of these myths produce short-term results – if any results at all – and lead to a lifetime of poor, unhealthy habits and decisions. In fact, named diet plans have more than a 90 percent failure rate after three years. That doesn’t sound like a great investment. Let’s learn the science and implement good habits for life – not just to fit into a bikini or a new dress. Here are five common weight loss myths.

Metabolic Syndrome: What It Is and What You Can Do About It

bigstock-Diabetes-Just-Ahead-Green-Road-29966219According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one-third of Americans over the age of 20 have Metabolic Syndrome. That’s a huge number, and it’s becoming more and more prevalent. But what is it?

Metabolic Syndrome is a group of medical disorders that, when taken together, increase the risk of developing chronic illnesses like cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer. In 1988, researchers coined the term “Syndrome X” to describe this grouping of symptoms that are centered on insulin resistance, which often leads to type 2 diabetes. Syndrome X is now also referred to as Metabolic Syndrome.

This condition is characterized by three or more of the following factors:
