How CityWell Continues to Change Lives

CityWell city of Long BranchAny reader of my blog or participant in one of my seminars knows how strongly I feel about the need to get away from the “sick care” model that reactively treats people after they become ill.

If we’re going to reverse the worldwide chronic illness epidemic, we need to adopt a “health care” model that focuses on keeping people well. Every individual needs to become educated so they’re capable of making better decisions on a daily basis about proper nutrition, exercise, and stress modification.

There is no greater example of this approach than the CityWell Municipal Employee Health and Wellness Program, a free resource created to help City of Long Branch employees and their dependents achieve and maintain a state of wellness and live a wellness lifestyle. As Health Educator for CityWell, I’m proud to say that the program has already exceeded expectations in terms of both participation and outcomes. Continue reading

A Shining Example of Embracing a Wellness Lifestyle

Citywell success storyOne thing I’m very proud of at Natural Healthcare Center is that we don’t just tell people what to do. We inspire people to make real behavioral changes and embrace a wellness lifestyle.

I bring this philosophy and approach to my role as health educator for the city of Long Branch’s CityWell program, a free educational and clinical resource created to help city employees and their families lead healthier lives. The program goes far beyond your typical wellness program that, frankly, tends to be more about hype than substance.

I provide health education seminars with the goal of educating and motivating people to make healthier choices and identifying what a real wellness lifestyle is. As a result, many employees have made permanent changes and reversed chronic illnesses such as pre-diabetes, type II diabetes, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Others have been able to better control a chronic illness.

By treating chronic illness with a real plan, we become healthier and save money.

Hammers Are Swinging at Natural Healthcare Center. Here’s Why.

Natural Healthcare Center 2nd Floor Renovations

The newly designed Physical Therapy and Nutrition offices on our second floor.

You may have noticed construction here at Natural Healthcare Center during the past few months. Rest assured that this is far more than a simple remodeling project. This is another investment in my 30-year journey that’s been dedicated to doing something different in healthcare.

It would be very easy for me to move to a small medical office, have a staff of three or four employees, work 20 fewer hours per week, treat fewer patients, and offer fewer services. But that would mean bailing on a 30-year journey, and I have no desire to do that. I started Proodian Healthcare because I wanted to do something beyond the norm. I didn’t want to take the safe route.

My goal is and always has been to create a new layer of healthcare. The layer between traumatic medical care and the horrific management of chronic conditions. This involves a great deal of risk and responsibility. It’s not easy. But it continues to be an incredibly rewarding journey.

I’ve very proud of the fact that I graduated from chiropractic school with 62 other people. I obviously wanted to be a chiropractor like everyone else, but I also saw the need for change that others may not have seen. I’m very proud of the fact that most people who come to Natural Healthcare Center, both as patients and as visitors, are enamored with our facility. What started as notebook doodle when I was a pre-med student in college has evolved into a true wellness facility.

Acupuncture, chiropractic care and other forms of healthcare are typically fragmented, but we’ve integrated them under one roof.

Not everything we do here makes money. But everything we do is based on a certain code and core values. Everything we do is driven by the desire to change healthcare. That’s what Proodian Healthcare, Wellness At Work and Natural Healthcare Center stand for.

We’re trying to change how healthcare works in this country and make things easier for our patients. That’s why the construction has been happening.

We’re welcoming a neurosurgeon, an interventional pain management doctor and a physician’s assistant for two reasons. First, we want to minimize the number of places our patients have to visit. Second, we want our patients to receive care in a truly integrated health and wellness center.

All business owners, not just in healthcare, should reinvest in their clients.

I respect my patients. I want them to have a clean bathroom. I want them to enjoy fresh fruit in the lobby. I want to be involved in my community. I want to provide them with everything they need under one roof.

The construction, the new specialists who will be seeing Natural Healthcare Center patients, the little details that make your visit an enjoyable experience – these are all part of a 30-year journey to do something different and change healthcare.

I hope you’ll join the Proodian Healthcare family and me as we continue our mission to help people feel better, function better and live longer.

Rutgers Research Shows Acupuncture Can Treat Inflammation

acupuncture long branch new jerseyAcupuncture has been used in China for thousands of years to restore and maintain good health by improving blood and energy flow, stimulating the body’s immune system and activating our natural healing powers. Although the effectiveness of acupuncture has been scientifically proven, the acceptance of acupuncture has been extremely slow in our country.

When you look at the American health system, which focuses on treating disease with medication and surgery instead of preventing disease through a wellness lifestyle, it’s easy to see why the medical establishment has been reluctant to embrace acupuncture. It doesn’t fit in with their way of thinking.

I hope new scientific evidence produced by researchers at Rutgers University, added to the mountain of evidence that already exists, will motivate them to change their way of thinking, especially as it relates to acupuncture.

The research established a direct connection between a form of acupuncture and relief from sepsis, an inflammatory disorder that can develop after an infection. Sepsis most commonly occurs in hospitals, claiming approximately 250,000 lives in our country each year. In other words, people don’t die from the infection. They die from sepsis.

How to Get a Better Workout in Just Minutes a Day

Burst Training at Naturaly Healthcare Center Long BranchIf you’re like most people, you’re on a never-ending mission to find a faster way to work out and feel better about how you look. Believe me; I know you’re crunched for time. As a father of five, I can sympathize.

Fortunately, there is a healthy way to get a productive workout without spending hours at the gym. It doesn’t involve an ab roller, thigh master or any of those other gimmicks you see peddled on television at 3 am.

The solution is called “Burst Training” or “High-Intensity Interval Training,” which involves shorter bursts of high intensity activity with rest periods in between each burst. This technique has been around for decades, but it’s gaining in popularity because more and more evidence is showing that it’s one of the most effective ways to exercise.

When scientists compared traditional cardio exercise (20-60 minutes of moderate, repetitive exercise) to burst training (20-60 seconds of high-intensity exercise), they found bursting could burn the same calories in 1/15th the time.

What is Wellness?

picture of Family running on the beachMany words used in healthcare are either misunderstood or misrepresented. “Wellness” is at or near the top of that list.

I’ve always believed that the term “wellness” should not be used to describe a single health-related service or discipline. It’s more than just going to your doctor, or just seeing a chiropractor, or just working out, or just eating healthier.

In an article in Dynamic Chiropractic magazine, Dr. David Seaman, whose thoughts closely parallel mine, defined true wellness as a state of optimal physical and mental function that is pursued by active lifestyle choices.

Poor Health: Bad Luck or Bad Choices?

Power SwitchMost people chalk up heart disease, cancer, type II diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and almost every other serious illness and disease to genetics. We were born that way and there’s nothing we can do about it.

While the genes passed from parents to children do impact health, recent research points more and more to the fact that there is much less of a genetic component to our health, and much more of an environmental component.

In other words, our health – good or bad – has less to do with luck and more to do with the choices we make. This is epigenetics.

The Dangers of Childhood Obesity and What You Can Do About It

TrimKids program Healthy Child RunningRemember what we did for fun as kids? There were a handful of video game systems, very basic computers with no internet access, maybe 20 TV channels, and a few fast food joints, so we were playing outside from early in the morning until the sun went down.

Riding bicycles, games of tag, playing baseball or soccer for hours at a time, building forts and tree houses, swimming, climbing, running, jumping – we were in constant motion until mom and dad yelled to us from the front door to come home for lunch and dinner.

Back in the good old days, about 5-10 percent of children were overweight.

Today, it’s a different story. Constant access to the internet. Video games. Hundreds of TV channels and DVR. Communication by text and email instead of face-to-face conversations. Fast food on every street corner. More time is spent in front of a TV or computer than outside playing.

Metabolic Syndrome: What It Is and What You Can Do About It

bigstock-Diabetes-Just-Ahead-Green-Road-29966219According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one-third of Americans over the age of 20 have Metabolic Syndrome. That’s a huge number, and it’s becoming more and more prevalent. But what is it?

Metabolic Syndrome is a group of medical disorders that, when taken together, increase the risk of developing chronic illnesses like cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer. In 1988, researchers coined the term “Syndrome X” to describe this grouping of symptoms that are centered on insulin resistance, which often leads to type 2 diabetes. Syndrome X is now also referred to as Metabolic Syndrome.

This condition is characterized by three or more of the following factors:

Getting Up to Speed on Gluten

“Gluten-free” products are becoming more and more popular. In fact, it’s a growing business. You’ve probably noticed gluten-free choices at grocery stores and restaurants. Celebrities like Lady Gaga have switched to a gluten-free diet. A few years ago, Chelsea Clinton made headlines for serving a gluten-free cake at her wedding.

As general awareness of gluten continues to rise, it’s important to have a basic understanding of what gluten is, and the difference between gluten intolerance – also called gluten sensitivity – and celiac disease.

Chiropractic and Acupuncture: A Natural Approach to Treating Headaches

If you’re like most people, when you get a headache, your gut reaction is to find relief in the medicine cabinet. More specifically, you look for relief from a pill, the magic bullet that gets rid of pain.

Part of our job is to introduce you to treatments that you may not have previously considered. Both chiropractic and acupuncture are natural alternatives to treating headaches without the side effects of some over-the-counter or prescription medications.

Acupuncture: 3 Common Myths Debunked

Acupuncture Long Branch New JerseyMost fears or preconceived notions that people may have about acupuncture are usually caused by something they were told, something they saw on television, or just a lack of understanding about what acupuncture does. There are two general rules in life that also apply to acupuncture:

Don’t believe everything you see and hear.

Do your homework and get the facts from professionals.

These are the three most common myths about acupuncture that we hear all the time. While they’re not wildly outlandish, they’re certainly easy to debunk. We hope this might open your eyes to the benefits of acupuncture and how it can improve your quality of life.

Myth 1: With all those needles, it MUST hurt!

Yes, needles are involved in acupuncture. But one of those big, scary acupuncture needles is about as thick as a strand of hair. Most people don’t even feel it when a needle has been inserted.

Every person’s body receives things differently, and it’s possible to feel the slightest prick for a split second. But constant, excruciating pain caused by big needles all over your body? That’s a myth.

Acupuncture does not require anything close to a high level of pain tolerance. Actually, most patients feel very relaxed during and after acupuncture treatment.

Myth 2: Acupuncture is for pain relief.

Technically, this is an accurate statement, but it doesn’t come close to telling the whole story.

Acupuncture is wonderful for relieving pain, whether it’s in the neck, back, joints or other parts of the body. However, it also helps with headaches, migraines, asthma, allergies, emotional trauma, stress and women’s issues, like menstrual cycles, fertility and menopause.

The goal of acupuncture, like most Eastern medicine, is to keep the body balanced. Imbalance is caused when your body’s energy and blood aren’t flowing in rhythm.

Think of your body as a circle. All parts of the body are interrelated on a mind-body-spirit level, so if one part is out of balance, the entire body is out of balance. Acupuncture helps to bring everything back into balance.

Myth 2: After a little time with those magic needles, I’ll jump off the table and feel as good as new!

Well, they’re not exactly magic needles. They’re not hypodermic needles and nothing is injected into your body.

What these needles do, without getting too technical, is restore balance by pointing your body’s energy and blood in the right direction and helping them flow in harmony. Many people do feel great after one acupuncture treatment, but if we’re trying to correct a chronic or long-term condition, ongoing treatment is usually necessary.

There really is no magic involved with acupuncture. It’s science – maybe not the science you grew up with, but science nonetheless. Your acupuncturist will discuss any issues you may be having, ask you questions, and determine the best way to help you achieve balance in mind, body and spirit.

Are you wondering if something you’ve heard about acupuncture might not be true? Are you dealing with a condition or issue that you think might be helped by acupuncture? Let us know!

Thank you to Lisa Abramson and Henry Chuu, Natural Healthcare Center’s Licensed Acupuncturists for their contributions to this article.
