Rutgers Research Shows Acupuncture Can Treat Inflammation

acupuncture long branch new jerseyAcupuncture has been used in China for thousands of years to restore and maintain good health by improving blood and energy flow, stimulating the body’s immune system and activating our natural healing powers. Although the effectiveness of acupuncture has been scientifically proven, the acceptance of acupuncture has been extremely slow in our country.

When you look at the American health system, which focuses on treating disease with medication and surgery instead of preventing disease through a wellness lifestyle, it’s easy to see why the medical establishment has been reluctant to embrace acupuncture. It doesn’t fit in with their way of thinking.

I hope new scientific evidence produced by researchers at Rutgers University, added to the mountain of evidence that already exists, will motivate them to change their way of thinking, especially as it relates to acupuncture.

The research established a direct connection between a form of acupuncture and relief from sepsis, an inflammatory disorder that can develop after an infection. Sepsis most commonly occurs in hospitals, claiming approximately 250,000 lives in our country each year. In other words, people don’t die from the infection. They die from sepsis.

Functional Medicine: A New Approach to Healthcare

Functional Medicine What is It?

In last week’s blog post, I discussed the new report from the Union of Concerned Scientists titled “The $11 Trillion Dollar Reward: How Simple Dietary Changes Can Save Lives and Money, and How We Get There.” The study revealed that if Americans ate one more serving of fruit or vegetables each day more than 30,000 deaths from cardiovascular disease could be prevented, and more than $5 billion in annual medical costs could be saved.

The report also predicts that healthcare costs from the treatment cardiovascular disease – most of which are preventable – will soar to $818 billion by 2030. I’ll give you a second to climb back onto your chair.

Obviously, a change in our country’s healthcare culture is not only necessary, but urgent. With that in mind, I wanted to explain what I feel is the future of healthcare – functional medicine, an approach to healthcare focused on disease prevention rather than treating symptoms after someone is already sick.

Obesity, Yet Again

Albert Einstein is quoted to have said “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

On September 18, 2012, the results of a Robert Woods Johnson funded study were released headlining that in 13 states “Adult obesity rates could exceed 60% by 2030”.

So why is this, a surprise?  How many studies do we need?  Anyone watching the epidemiology over the last 30 years would see the heat maps going from yellow to orange to red in most part of the United States.

No pun intended, but identifying the 800 pound gorilla in the room is insufficient.  Many Americans have grown comfortable with their 800 pound friend.  Think of the euphemisms: “love handles”, “pot belly”, etc.  We need straight talk, not generalities.  We need to tell the diabetic, “Choose blindness, loss of kidney function and stroke or 10 more years of useful life!”  Chronic illness is subtle and nasty.  It’s about the grim reaper approaching from the future, only to be discovered when it’s too late.

In New York City, Mayor Bloomberg is trying to legislate lifestyle behavior by limiting soda consumption to less than 16 ounces a pop.  Good luck with that.  These are public spectacles.  They are distractions.  Bloomberg’s actions are like the man on the beach facing the tsunami.

It’s long been established that obesity is a primary driver of chronic illness and disease of all types.  It would be far more productive to focus more communications from headline grabbing sensationalism to the action items required to save lives.  Children learn from adults so, Continue reading

The Health of Our Nation

I was listening to the news on the radio yesterday and a team of doctors were discussing the cost of “Obamacare” and if Americans can only get healthier the cost of healthcare would go down….I thought what an eye opening earth shattering statement that many of us have been saying for 2-3 decades now. Its amazes me that it takes a polarizing law like this that had to go to the Supreme Court before our medical professionals started to talk about the cost of chronic illness. One statement made on the program was that doctors have done a bad job preventing Type II Diabetes and Obesity, two very costly and highly preventable chronic illnesses. The point here is that prevention is not part of the medical model…..sick care and health care are two very different things. I thank God for our medical providers who save lives every day and that is sick care but the time has come to better define “health” care and the fact that on this same radio program it was very clear that the immediate treatment they suggested for the Type II Diabetes and Obesity epidemics was Gastric Bypass Surgery…..$20-25k a pop and this was the medical solution….period. We must be careful with this logic seeing how we have gone through the decades of surgical procedures that were supposed to “cure” situations from tonsillectomies to hysterectomies and now gastric bypass. The right intention may be in their heart but the simple Lifestyle Modifications through Functional Medicine is right here right now. Spread the word and let’s take back the health of our nation which we have carelessly ignored.
