How to Identify Nutritional Imbalances and Toxicities

laboratory technician holding a blood tube testBecause there’s no license for nutrition in New Jersey, a lot of different people make nutritional recommendations, from those with degrees in nutrition to dietitians and gym owners. In many doctor’s offices, “nutrition” amounts to a brief patient history and stepping on a scale.

If your weight is appropriate, you’re told everything is fine. If you’re overweight, you’re told to go on a certain diet and take a few supplements. The problem is, this approach typically fails to identify and address the root cause of nutritional imbalances, genetic issues, and conditions like intestinal permeability.

When you go to the doctor, it’s their job to tell you what’s wrong with you – the root cause, not the symptom – and what you should do about it. If you took your car to the shop because it was making a weird noise, the mechanic wouldn’t just give you ear plugs to block out the noise. They’d find out what was causing the noise and fix it at the source. Continue reading

Breaking Free from Decades of Frustration: A NHC Success Story

Proodian healthcare Patient Success StoryTo protect the patient’s privacy, we’ll refer to her as Mary.

Mary, age 56, came to Natural Healthcare Center with what she called “the frustration of a lifetime.” She had been diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia more than 30 years earlier. Mary had tried infusions, medication and supplementation with no success, and nobody could figure out why.

Mary had been living with chronic fatigue for years. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) was causing constipation, bloating and stomach pain. She suffered from hypothyroidism, acid reflux, cold intolerance, hypoglycemic symptoms, and dizziness. She even had miscarriages. Mary was taking prescription medication for iron deficiency, acid reflux and hypothyroidism.

Mary knew there was a history of celiac disease in her family. She never tested positive for it, so her doctors in the conventional medicine community felt gluten wasn’t the cause of her anemia. Continue reading

A Reason to Celebrate, and My New Year’s Wish

Proodian Healthcare success storyAs another year comes to an end, I hope the notion that chronic disease is not preventable and reversible will also come to an end. If we’re going to achieve true healthcare reform and reduce costs, our nation must start wrapping its arms around an integrated approach to healthcare that focuses on prevention.

As I get ready to celebrate Christmas with my family, I’d like to celebrate the work and success of my colleague, business partner and dear friend, Dr. Oscar Coetzee, PhD. 10 years ago, Dr. Coetzee joined me at Natural Healthcare Center. Together, we continue to see the reversal of chronic illness every day. Continue reading

How I Changed My Behavior and Transformed My Body

Proodian healthcare Patient Success StoryThis is a guest post by Bill Freeman, a retired 63-year-old school principal and Natural Healthcare Center patient. I’d like to personally thank Bill for sharing his story. Dr. James Proodian

I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer three years ago when tumors were discovered on both sides of my thyroid. After having surgery to remove the thyroid, I was treated with radioactive iodine to kill any remaining cancer cells in my body.

Over the course of about two weeks, I gained 32 pounds. You have to drink a lot of fluids to get the radioactive iodine out of your body, so much of what I gained was water weight.

I had been getting regular chiropractic adjustments from Dr. Proodian and finally told him that I was disappointed because I couldn’t lose the weight. I had been on Weight Watchers. I used apps on my phone. I would lose a few pounds, hit a wall, and just gain it all back.

Dr. Proodian suggested that I see Dr. (Oscar) Coetzee. I told Dr. Coetzee that if he could help me lose weight, I would do whatever he wanted me to do. I’m a Type A personality. If you tell me to eat four ounces of turkey, I’m going to eat four ounces of turkey. You tell me to eat 17 carrots, and I’m going to eat 17 carrots.

Hypothyroidism, Part 3: The Role of Clinical Nutrition

Hyperthyroidism photo of Thyroid GlandThis is the third in a series of monthly posts about hypothyroidism. Please feel free to email your thyroid-related questions to jproodian@naturalhc.com or post them in the comments section at the bottom of this post and I’ll be happy to answer them.

At Natural Healthcare Center, we take a comprehensive approach to the treatment of any condition as opposed to focusing on a single treatment option. In Part 2 of our series of posts covering hypothyroidism, we examined why acupuncture is one of many tools in our treatment arsenal.

Nutrition and diet also play an important role in diagnosing and treating hypothyroidism. We are very fortunate that Dr. Oscar Coetzee, PhD, a top-notch clinical nutritionist, is part of the Natural Healthcare Center family, and I’m grateful for Dr. Coetzee’s contributions to this post.

A significant amount of clinical data collected during the past six months or so suggests that various inflammatory foods can have an adverse effect on the thyroid. Research is ongoing, but we’ve seen positive changes when gluten is eliminated for three to six months from the diet of people who are dealing with hypothyroidism.
