Did You Know Every Chronic Illness Has a “Pre” Stage?

Chronic Illness warning signsAccording to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one out of every three adults – 86 million total – have prediabetes, also known as insulin resistance or Metabolic Syndrome. Of those 86 million, nine out of 10 don’t know they have prediabetes. 15-30 percent will develop type 2 diabetes within five years.

Type 2 diabetes isn’t the only form of chronic illness with a “pre” stage. It just happens to have a quantifiable diagnosis that’s known to lead to the more serious condition.

Precancerous cells can lead to cancer. Osteopenia refers to bone density that’s lower than normal but not quite low enough to be called osteoporosis. Being overweight can be the “pre” condition of obesity.

But just because a “pre” condition doesn’t have a formal name, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. Blood pressure can be elevated without being classified as high blood pressure. Inflammation could be a precursor to osteoarthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, neuro-degenerative disorders and many more disorders. Continue reading

Angry Fat and the Truth about Obesity

angry fatIn a previous post, I discussed how mad cow disease is a prime example of how altered structure changes the information of that structure, which in turn impacts the way the body functions.

More specifically, when man alters the state of food, it alters the structural information within that food, which affects our health and causes disease. These facts are painfully obvious when you take a closer look at the obesity epidemic in our country.

Central obesity, or excessive fat around the midsection, poses the greatest risk of chronic illness associated with fat accumulation. The dangerous fat stored in the belly area is called angry fat.

What Is Chronic Illness?

Diabetic is doing a glucose level finger blood testChronic illness is a manmade tsunami that has taken over the world. 18 percent of our nation’s GDP is spent on healthcare. By 2040, that figure is expected to rise to 34 percent.

Why? Because 75 percent of all healthcare costs go to treating chronic illness, which gets worse as we age in most cases. It’s crippling healthcare and strangling healthcare workers across our country and around the world.

Some of the most common chronic illnesses are:

  • High blood pressure
  • Type II diabetes
  • Gout
  • Dementia
  • Autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis
  • Neurological disorders like depression
  • Attention deficit disorder
  • Autism
  • Digestive diseases like gastric reflux
  • Ulcers
  • Inflammatory bowel
  • Bone loss diseases like osteoporosis
  • Obstructive pulmonary diseases
  • Asthma
  • Muscle pain and weakness from chronic fatigue syndrome or fibromyalgia
  • Kidney and liver ailments
  • Vision problems like macular degeneration
  • Cancer

What Happened to Truth, Justice and the American Way?

Child-pretending-to-be-a-super heroAs a kid in the 1970s, my favorite TV show was Superman. Every day, I would watch reruns of the old black and white show from the 1950s, and every year, I would dress up as Superman for Halloween.

The thing I remember most about this show is what Superman was always fighting for – truth, justice and the American way!

Truth has really come under the microscope recently with all of the political scandals going on in our country. I’m not a political guy, but I pay attention to what’s happening. It does make you wonder about what the truth really is.

When it comes to our health, the truth is no longer up for debate, but our country and our leaders don’t seem to want to accept it.

As Dr. Mark Hyman wrote years ago, the American healthcare system is based on the outdated notion that disease should be treated, not prevented. Our system doesn’t keep us healthy. It keeps us sick.

Balance is Key

Not being an auto-mechanic, every trip to repair or maintain my car is an adventure.  Here in Monmouth County, I have experienced too many situations where I get one thing fixed only to discover something else needs repair.  Some mechanics focus on one part of the car at a time and ignore all of the other connected parts.  That often makes me the victim of “unintended consequences”.

Triad of Health

Some things, like your approach to health are not meant to be treated in a piecemeal fashion.  I focus my patients on the “triad of health”: Nutrition, Physical and Psychological.  Our body is designed to function as highly integrated unit.  “Homeostasis” means balance and the goal for everyone should be a lifestyle that illustrates choices designed around balance.

Common sense healthcare begins and ends with the integrated approach embodied in the triad of health notion.  Take, for example, Continue reading

The Health of Our Nation

I was listening to the news on the radio yesterday and a team of doctors were discussing the cost of “Obamacare” and if Americans can only get healthier the cost of healthcare would go down….I thought what an eye opening earth shattering statement that many of us have been saying for 2-3 decades now. Its amazes me that it takes a polarizing law like this that had to go to the Supreme Court before our medical professionals started to talk about the cost of chronic illness. One statement made on the program was that doctors have done a bad job preventing Type II Diabetes and Obesity, two very costly and highly preventable chronic illnesses. The point here is that prevention is not part of the medical model…..sick care and health care are two very different things. I thank God for our medical providers who save lives every day and that is sick care but the time has come to better define “health” care and the fact that on this same radio program it was very clear that the immediate treatment they suggested for the Type II Diabetes and Obesity epidemics was Gastric Bypass Surgery…..$20-25k a pop and this was the medical solution….period. We must be careful with this logic seeing how we have gone through the decades of surgical procedures that were supposed to “cure” situations from tonsillectomies to hysterectomies and now gastric bypass. The right intention may be in their heart but the simple Lifestyle Modifications through Functional Medicine is right here right now. Spread the word and let’s take back the health of our nation which we have carelessly ignored.
