New Research Links Processed Sugar to Cancer Growth

Sugar and Cancer In the previous post, I discussed how sugar and artificial sweeteners can affect a child’s brain. ADD, ADHD, learning disabilities, anxiety, depression, poor memory and other issues are often traced back to a sugar-heavy diet. Scientific studies suggest that the early onset of neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s can be linked to high sugar consumption.

This is why it’s so important to limit sugar intake and help kids establish good eating habits at a young age. Food and drinks with added sugar and artificial, manmade sweeteners are the ones to avoid.

Of course, if you pass on anything that comes in a can, a box, a carton or a drive-thru, you’ll eliminate the vast majority of sugar-heavy and artificially sweetened food products from your diet.

We’ve known for a long time that heavy sugar consumption can lead to obesity, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer and other chronic illnesses. But a recent study indicates that cancer cells actually grow and thrive on processed sugar.

The University College London (UCL) in the United Kingdom made this discovery using glucoCEST (glucose chemical exchange saturation transfer), a new technique that uses MRI to show sugar consumption and detect cancer. Basically, the MRI is sensitized to glucose uptake, causing tumors to appear as bright images.

GlucoCEST is based on the premise that cancer cells consume more glucose, or sugar, than healthy tissue. In other words, the cancer feeds off sugar to grow.

The point here is that sugar is so closely tied to cancer that it is being used by doctors to detect the presence of cancer, much like low-dose radiation injections have been used in traditional scanning.

The good news is that UCL researchers believe an injection of sugar could be a less expensive, safer alternative for detecting cancer than an injection of radioactive material. This would also eliminate the side effects associated with radiation injections.

The bad news is that the amount of sugar found in “half a standard sized chocolate bar” is all that’s required to detect cancer cells when using the glucoCEST technique, according to UCL researchers. This suggests that it doesn’t take much sugar to potentially stimulate the growth of cancer cells.

The solution may seem easy. Just eliminate sugar from our diet. Unfortunately, we have a food industry in this country that cares more about profits than our good health. They try to sneak processed sugar and artificial sweeteners into our food supply using dozens of aliases.

Our job is to educate ourselves, read food labels, and make smart nutritional decisions each day. Learn the difference between the natural sugar that God made, like fructose found in fruit, and the unnatural, manmade sugar that has no nutritional value whatsoever. Stop buying junk from food manufacturers who profit from chronic illness.

Multiple scientific studies now point to a direct connection between sugar consumption and cancer. Now it’s up to us to use and apply this knowledge in our everyday lives so we can feel better, function better and live longer.
