Happy 80th Birthday, Mom! Love, James

james and momAs the youngest of four children, I always had a special relationship with my mom. She taught me at a young age the value of honesty, hard work, commitment and caring for others. She was also the primary voice who encouraged me to follow my dreams and pursue my passion. You see, I had a lot of dreams and passion!

We had a similar conversation years later, but the stakes were much higher. Let me explain.

I always knew I would end up in private practice. After nine years of work, I decided to buy a building and practice. At the time, my wife was pregnant with our third child and we had just moved into a fixer upper with two small daughters.

The opportunity presented to me in March of 2003 was the purchase of 10 West End Court in Long Branch and Atlantic Chiropractic Center. I was about to go heavily into debt. If Natural Healthcare Center failed, my family would be without a home because the bank used my house for collateral.

Instead of Resolving to Lose Weight, Resolve to Do This

New Years ResolutionsThis is one of my favorite weeks of the year because I usually get to spend an entire week with my wife and kids as I look forward to the New Year. Unfortunately, a lot of people quickly leave the joy of Christmas behind and become depressed or feel guilty about how they look, their relationships, or their career.

This helps to explain why nearly half of Americans make New Year’s resolutions. Of course, the most common resolution is to lose weight, whether that means going to the gym or trying the latest fad diet.

The problem with the average exercise regimen is that most are unsupervised. Instead of following a customized fitness program developed by a professional, most people do what they see other people do – run on the treadmill, lift weights, take an aerobics class, and so on. Continue reading

Startling Facts about Obesity and Its Impact in New Jersey

obesity statistics

I often discuss the global epidemic of obesity and how it leads to chronic illness, which is crippling healthcare systems around the world. But what is the state of obesity in New Jersey, right here in our own backyard?

The numbers may shock you.

According to data released by the New Jersey Department of Health in October of 2015, 26.9 percent of New Jersey adults are obese, and 36.3 percent are overweight. That means nearly two thirds (63.2 percent) of New Jersey adults are either obese or overweight.

If we continue at this pace, nearly half (48.6 percent) of New Jersey adults will be obese by 2030.

The numbers aren’t any better for our children. One in four children ages 10-17 and 23 percent of high school students are obese or overweight.

But here is one statistic that truly frightens me. In New Jersey, more than 14 percent of low-income children under the age of 5 are obese. New Jersey has the highest rate of low-income childhood obesity among the 44 states that report this data. Continue reading

Resolve to Help Your Kids Become Healthier in 2015

Trim Kids I love the holiday season. I love ringing in the New Year and kissing my wife at midnight.

But there is one thing I despise about the New Year – resolutions. Every year, money-hungry corporations peddle unhealthy weight loss gimmicks, preying on the desperation of people who are sick or unhappy.

Most of these resolutions don’t last more than a couple of weeks, and the cycle of desperation, failure and depression continues. This cycle often leads to chronic illness and even death.

Of course, these corporations wouldn’t make so much money if people made smarter decisions.

Instead of searching for magic potions and silver bullets and trying to take shortcuts, we need to make permanent lifestyle changes that make true wellness possible. As I’ve said thousands of times, healthy weight loss is nothing but a by-product of a wellness lifestyle.

The sooner we do this, the better. That’s why I want you to resolve to help your kids adopt a wellness lifestyle. After all, more kids are overweight today than at any time in our history, and most obese children grow up to be obese adults. Continue reading

Why Sitting Can Be as Unhealthy as Smoking

sitting is the new smokingIn Part 1 of my post about exercising the brain, I pointed out how the sedentary lifestyle – sitting around all day at home and at work – is terrible for the brain. In fact, sitting is the new smoking.

As much as I would like to say I came up with that painfully true observation, credit goes to Dr. Anup Kanodia, a physician and researcher at the Center for Personalized Health Care at Wexner Medical Center at Ohio State University.

According to an article in the Los Angeles Times, Dr. Kanodia cited a 2012 Australian study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Researchers estimated that every hour spent sitting around watching television reduces life expectancy by about 22 minutes, while a single cigarette shaves 11 minutes off of the smoker’s life.

What to Look For in a Pain Doctor

How to Select a Doctor to treat your painMy wife and I are having our basement painted. With five kids, the basement is an important place in our home.

Without a second thought, we called the painter who we’ve used for years. He told my wife that he would send an estimate.

She said, “Why? It doesn’t matter. We’re hiring you.”

Isn’t it great when you get to a place where you unconditionally trust someone? We don’t have to worry about our painter taking advantage of us. We have no doubt that he’ll give us a fair price, show up on time and do a wonderful job.

Balance is Key

Not being an auto-mechanic, every trip to repair or maintain my car is an adventure.  Here in Monmouth County, I have experienced too many situations where I get one thing fixed only to discover something else needs repair.  Some mechanics focus on one part of the car at a time and ignore all of the other connected parts.  That often makes me the victim of “unintended consequences”.

Triad of Health

Some things, like your approach to health are not meant to be treated in a piecemeal fashion.  I focus my patients on the “triad of health”: Nutrition, Physical and Psychological.  Our body is designed to function as highly integrated unit.  “Homeostasis” means balance and the goal for everyone should be a lifestyle that illustrates choices designed around balance.

Common sense healthcare begins and ends with the integrated approach embodied in the triad of health notion.  Take, for example, Continue reading

Obesity, Yet Again

Albert Einstein is quoted to have said “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

On September 18, 2012, the results of a Robert Woods Johnson funded study were released headlining that in 13 states “Adult obesity rates could exceed 60% by 2030”.

So why is this, a surprise?  How many studies do we need?  Anyone watching the epidemiology over the last 30 years would see the heat maps going from yellow to orange to red in most part of the United States.

No pun intended, but identifying the 800 pound gorilla in the room is insufficient.  Many Americans have grown comfortable with their 800 pound friend.  Think of the euphemisms: “love handles”, “pot belly”, etc.  We need straight talk, not generalities.  We need to tell the diabetic, “Choose blindness, loss of kidney function and stroke or 10 more years of useful life!”  Chronic illness is subtle and nasty.  It’s about the grim reaper approaching from the future, only to be discovered when it’s too late.

In New York City, Mayor Bloomberg is trying to legislate lifestyle behavior by limiting soda consumption to less than 16 ounces a pop.  Good luck with that.  These are public spectacles.  They are distractions.  Bloomberg’s actions are like the man on the beach facing the tsunami.

It’s long been established that obesity is a primary driver of chronic illness and disease of all types.  It would be far more productive to focus more communications from headline grabbing sensationalism to the action items required to save lives.  Children learn from adults so, Continue reading
