Hammers Are Swinging at Natural Healthcare Center. Here’s Why.

Natural Healthcare Center 2nd Floor Renovations

The newly designed Physical Therapy and Nutrition offices on our second floor.

You may have noticed construction here at Natural Healthcare Center during the past few months. Rest assured that this is far more than a simple remodeling project. This is another investment in my 30-year journey that’s been dedicated to doing something different in healthcare.

It would be very easy for me to move to a small medical office, have a staff of three or four employees, work 20 fewer hours per week, treat fewer patients, and offer fewer services. But that would mean bailing on a 30-year journey, and I have no desire to do that. I started Proodian Healthcare because I wanted to do something beyond the norm. I didn’t want to take the safe route.

My goal is and always has been to create a new layer of healthcare. The layer between traumatic medical care and the horrific management of chronic conditions. This involves a great deal of risk and responsibility. It’s not easy. But it continues to be an incredibly rewarding journey.

I’ve very proud of the fact that I graduated from chiropractic school with 62 other people. I obviously wanted to be a chiropractor like everyone else, but I also saw the need for change that others may not have seen. I’m very proud of the fact that most people who come to Natural Healthcare Center, both as patients and as visitors, are enamored with our facility. What started as notebook doodle when I was a pre-med student in college has evolved into a true wellness facility.

Acupuncture, chiropractic care and other forms of healthcare are typically fragmented, but we’ve integrated them under one roof.

Not everything we do here makes money. But everything we do is based on a certain code and core values. Everything we do is driven by the desire to change healthcare. That’s what Proodian Healthcare, Wellness At Work and Natural Healthcare Center stand for.

We’re trying to change how healthcare works in this country and make things easier for our patients. That’s why the construction has been happening.

We’re welcoming a neurosurgeon, an interventional pain management doctor and a physician’s assistant for two reasons. First, we want to minimize the number of places our patients have to visit. Second, we want our patients to receive care in a truly integrated health and wellness center.

All business owners, not just in healthcare, should reinvest in their clients.

I respect my patients. I want them to have a clean bathroom. I want them to enjoy fresh fruit in the lobby. I want to be involved in my community. I want to provide them with everything they need under one roof.

The construction, the new specialists who will be seeing Natural Healthcare Center patients, the little details that make your visit an enjoyable experience – these are all part of a 30-year journey to do something different and change healthcare.

I hope you’ll join the Proodian Healthcare family and me as we continue our mission to help people feel better, function better and live longer.

Understanding Detox, Part 1: The Danger of Toxins

NHC's Detoxification Program Long Branch NJ

I’ve noticed quite a bit of confusion and misinformation about detoxification on television, online and among the general public. True detoxification is not a cleanse, and it’s not for everyone. Detoxification is for people who have been properly screened through blood tests, surveys and other testing to assess their level of toxification.

Detoxification is exactly what the word implies. A detoxification program is intended to detoxify the liver and lymphatic system. It’s like cleaning out your garage and putting everything back where it’s supposed to be.

Simply put, you need to give your liver a break. If your liver is toxic, it can’t detoxify the blood that passes through it. Toxins are then recirculated through our bodies, creating a toxic environment.

Now that we’ve clarified what detoxification is, it’s important to understand exactly what toxins are, the symptoms of toxins and the problems they cause.

The Greatest Gift You Can Give Your Family for 2014

Wellness Lifestyle I can’t stand New Year’s resolutions. They usually involve temporary, unhealthy gimmicks designed to fill corporate coffers while leading to disappointment, failure and depression.

We need to stop looking for shortcuts and commit to living a wellness lifestyle – long-term proposition with health benefits that far outweigh the challenges. Let’s start now and put a plan for living a wellness lifestyle in writing.

You can’t build a house without a written architectural plan, and you can’t have insurance coverage without a written policy. Wellness is no different.

My end-of-year wish is that every family starts writing things down so we can develop a true wellness plan for 2014. Start by looking at the physical, nutritional and psychological components of the Triad of Health.

How Denise Changed Her Life: A NHC Success Story

Proodian healthcare Patient Success StoryOver the course of the year, I’ve shared a lot of information, offered a lot of advice and voiced a lot of very strong opinions on my blog. The main drivers behind the topics covered and the passion I have for living a “wellness lifestyle” all year long, are real people – people who have made the decision to change their lives in order to feel better, function better and live longer.

As we wind down 2013, the year of the family, I’d like to share some of these success stories that I’ve been privileged to witness here at Natural Healthcare Center. One such story involves Denise, who I first met years ago during a lunch-and-learn seminar at the Asbury Park Press.

Denise had been dealing with weight issues since she was eight years old. This led to self-esteem issues, whether she considered herself the “fat girl” in the group or couldn’t find clothes that fit. This caused her to go through an endless cycle of diets and weight loss gimmicks, losing weight temporarily and gaining back that weight and more.
Denise was looking for a program that would provide the structure and direction she would need to make a true lifestyle change. At the time, she was dealing with pain in her back and swollen ankles. A blood test revealed significant inflammation, which I believed could be addressed through proper nutrition.

Hypothyroidism, Part 3: The Role of Clinical Nutrition

Hyperthyroidism photo of Thyroid GlandThis is the third in a series of monthly posts about hypothyroidism. Please feel free to email your thyroid-related questions to jproodian@naturalhc.com or post them in the comments section at the bottom of this post and I’ll be happy to answer them.

At Natural Healthcare Center, we take a comprehensive approach to the treatment of any condition as opposed to focusing on a single treatment option. In Part 2 of our series of posts covering hypothyroidism, we examined why acupuncture is one of many tools in our treatment arsenal.

Nutrition and diet also play an important role in diagnosing and treating hypothyroidism. We are very fortunate that Dr. Oscar Coetzee, PhD, a top-notch clinical nutritionist, is part of the Natural Healthcare Center family, and I’m grateful for Dr. Coetzee’s contributions to this post.

A significant amount of clinical data collected during the past six months or so suggests that various inflammatory foods can have an adverse effect on the thyroid. Research is ongoing, but we’ve seen positive changes when gluten is eliminated for three to six months from the diet of people who are dealing with hypothyroidism.

What is Wellness?

picture of Family running on the beachMany words used in healthcare are either misunderstood or misrepresented. “Wellness” is at or near the top of that list.

I’ve always believed that the term “wellness” should not be used to describe a single health-related service or discipline. It’s more than just going to your doctor, or just seeing a chiropractor, or just working out, or just eating healthier.

In an article in Dynamic Chiropractic magazine, Dr. David Seaman, whose thoughts closely parallel mine, defined true wellness as a state of optimal physical and mental function that is pursued by active lifestyle choices.

Metabolic Syndrome: What It Is and What You Can Do About It

bigstock-Diabetes-Just-Ahead-Green-Road-29966219According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one-third of Americans over the age of 20 have Metabolic Syndrome. That’s a huge number, and it’s becoming more and more prevalent. But what is it?

Metabolic Syndrome is a group of medical disorders that, when taken together, increase the risk of developing chronic illnesses like cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer. In 1988, researchers coined the term “Syndrome X” to describe this grouping of symptoms that are centered on insulin resistance, which often leads to type 2 diabetes. Syndrome X is now also referred to as Metabolic Syndrome.

This condition is characterized by three or more of the following factors:

Understanding the Pyramid of Health and Why It’s So Important

If you have any familiarity whatsoever with Proodian Healthcare, you’ve probably heard me or someone from my staff talk about the Pyramid of Health. At the very least, you’ve heard us say something that indirectly refers to the Pyramid of Health and didn’t even realize it.

There’s a reason for this. The Pyramid of Health, pictured above, is at the core of everything we do. It motivates and inspires our thought processes and decision making. The Pyramid is what’s going through my head during every radio show, every blog, every speaking engagement and every appointment with a patient.

It’s the driving force behind all three components of Proodian Healthcare:

  1. Teach Me: Health literacy is the key to longevity. MyWellnessAtWork.com
  2. Treat Me: An integrated approach to health and wellness. NaturalHealthCareCenter.com
  3. Supply Me: An online store for pharmaceutical-grade supplements. PutBackWhatYouLack.com

Acupuncture: 3 Common Myths Debunked

Acupuncture Long Branch New JerseyMost fears or preconceived notions that people may have about acupuncture are usually caused by something they were told, something they saw on television, or just a lack of understanding about what acupuncture does. There are two general rules in life that also apply to acupuncture:

Don’t believe everything you see and hear.

Do your homework and get the facts from professionals.

These are the three most common myths about acupuncture that we hear all the time. While they’re not wildly outlandish, they’re certainly easy to debunk. We hope this might open your eyes to the benefits of acupuncture and how it can improve your quality of life.

Myth 1: With all those needles, it MUST hurt!

Yes, needles are involved in acupuncture. But one of those big, scary acupuncture needles is about as thick as a strand of hair. Most people don’t even feel it when a needle has been inserted.

Every person’s body receives things differently, and it’s possible to feel the slightest prick for a split second. But constant, excruciating pain caused by big needles all over your body? That’s a myth.

Acupuncture does not require anything close to a high level of pain tolerance. Actually, most patients feel very relaxed during and after acupuncture treatment.

Myth 2: Acupuncture is for pain relief.

Technically, this is an accurate statement, but it doesn’t come close to telling the whole story.

Acupuncture is wonderful for relieving pain, whether it’s in the neck, back, joints or other parts of the body. However, it also helps with headaches, migraines, asthma, allergies, emotional trauma, stress and women’s issues, like menstrual cycles, fertility and menopause.

The goal of acupuncture, like most Eastern medicine, is to keep the body balanced. Imbalance is caused when your body’s energy and blood aren’t flowing in rhythm.

Think of your body as a circle. All parts of the body are interrelated on a mind-body-spirit level, so if one part is out of balance, the entire body is out of balance. Acupuncture helps to bring everything back into balance.

Myth 2: After a little time with those magic needles, I’ll jump off the table and feel as good as new!

Well, they’re not exactly magic needles. They’re not hypodermic needles and nothing is injected into your body.

What these needles do, without getting too technical, is restore balance by pointing your body’s energy and blood in the right direction and helping them flow in harmony. Many people do feel great after one acupuncture treatment, but if we’re trying to correct a chronic or long-term condition, ongoing treatment is usually necessary.

There really is no magic involved with acupuncture. It’s science – maybe not the science you grew up with, but science nonetheless. Your acupuncturist will discuss any issues you may be having, ask you questions, and determine the best way to help you achieve balance in mind, body and spirit.

Are you wondering if something you’ve heard about acupuncture might not be true? Are you dealing with a condition or issue that you think might be helped by acupuncture? Let us know!

Thank you to Lisa Abramson and Henry Chuu, Natural Healthcare Center’s Licensed Acupuncturists for their contributions to this article.
